Boston Antiques Weekend Cancelled
Marvin Getman of New England Antique Shows has announced the cancellation
of Boston Antique Weekend which was to be held April 18-19, 2009.
“We built it and they came, and then we were hit with the biggest economic
downturn the country has seen in modern times. The show just didn’t
have ample opportunity to grow legs before we got caught in this downturn.
Based on my projections, the show would have been about 50% of the size
of last year’s show. After two years of building a world class show,
this was unacceptable. My reputation is more important to me than the
financial loss I will sustain by cancelling the show. This was one of
the most difficult decisions in my 30 year career of producing shows.”
After announcing the news of the cancellation, Getman received numerous
emails from dealers praising his difficult decision. One dealer wrote.
“It was just on Saturday waiting in line at the Wilmington show that
I heard Stella cancelled the Modern show. Two great shows gone in one
weekend.” This seems to be the consensus of the many emails Getman received.
Since announcing his decision, other well known shows have also been
canceled; namely the Ellis Memorial show in Boston, Modern shows in
New York and Miami, and the Asian show in New York.
Boston Antiques Weekend, comprising the Boston Antiques Show and the
Boston Antiquarian Book and Ephemera Fair, began in 2007 at Boston’s
Bayside Expo Center and moved to the upscale Seaport World Trade Center
in 2008. It was the largest show of Getman’s roster of 6 shows, 5 in
Eastern Massachusetts and one in Vermont.
This May, Getman will begin
a casual antiques market called the “SoWa Antiques Market” in Boston’s
hip area of the South End where art galleries and studios mingle with
fine restaurants. It will be open each Sunday from May 17 through October
except on holiday weekends with free admission and parking. In these
economic times, Getman expects this market to answer the needs of dealers
looking for cost effective way to reach new buyers.
To satisfy requests
from book and ephemera dealers, Getman is adding a section of his Topsfield
Antiques Market, May 23-24 called the "Book and Paper Annex".
